The short version
If you have been searching for semi-classical dance classes near me in Gurgaon and finding either pure classical academies or nothing at all, here is a Sunday to try the style properly. On 20 September, Off Grid Dance Studio hosts a two-hour semi-classical workshop with guest choreographer Kanupriya Gupta at its studio in Sushant Lok 1. The routine is set to Deewani Mastani, the preview above is the actual choreography you will learn, the fee is ₹800, and you book by messaging the studio on WhatsApp.
Off Grid is a working dance studio, not an event company. The same floor runs ten batches a week across Jazz, Hip Hop, Kids and Heels, and the workshops bring in styles the weekly timetable does not cover. Semi-classical follows last week's K-pop workshop.
What actually happens in the two hours
A workshop is built differently from a weekly class. In a weekly batch you build technique over months. In a workshop you take one routine from zero to performance-ready in a single sitting, so the two hours are structured tightly:
- Warm-up and the basics. Posture, the hand positions the routine uses, the footwork pattern and the spins, taught slowly before any music.
- The choreography, section by section. Each phrase is taught count by count, slow first, then at tempo, then joined to the previous one. Nobody moves on until the room has it.
- Expression. The part that makes semi-classical semi-classical: the eyes, the face, the timing of the hands against the lyric. This is where the choreographer earns the fee.
- Full runs. The routine top to bottom, in groups, with the music, so you leave having actually performed it.
Most people film the final run for themselves. Bring a friend to hold the phone, or ask, and someone will.
Who this is for
Anyone who can move and wants to learn the routine. The choreography is taught from the first phrase, and the room at Off Grid is always a mix: people who trained in Kathak or Bharatanatyam as children and want it back, people who have only danced at weddings, and the studio's regular hip hop and jazz students crossing over for a Sunday. Semi-classical rewards expression and musicality more than flexibility, which makes it one of the more forgiving styles for a first workshop.
It is also the style most sangeet numbers borrow from. If you have a wedding coming up, this is two hours of exactly the vocabulary you will need; the studio's wedding and sangeet choreography is built on it.
If you are unsure whether it is pitched right for you, ask on WhatsApp before you book. You will get a straight answer.
Why semi-classical is worth a Sunday
Semi-classical takes the vocabulary of the classical forms, mostly Kathak-style hand gestures, footwork and chakkars, and sets it to film and popular music, with the storytelling kept and the years of training removed. It teaches three things that carry into every other style: how to hold a line through your arms and fingers, how to make a small movement read from across a room, and how to perform a lyric rather than just count it. Learning one piece this way also shows you, quickly and honestly, whether you want to go deeper into a classical form.
